WHAT I'M EATING//
as someone who struggled for years and years with an eating disorder, but has now found relative peace, i feel as though there's value in sharing a bit of what i like to put into my body. (if for no other reason than to reveal that there isn't a low-fat, diet food in sight, and even eating all the egg-yolks and cheese i can muster still allows me to have a healthy and happy relationship with what i look like)...
1. i'm not a big fruit person, but for cherries. i love them. and i love that, for the most part, we respect their growing season. for the most part you won't see them in the markets outside the warm summer months. as a child i'd eat as many as i could possibly stand during july and august, not much has changed.
2. i am a snacker. so cherries and pickles and small finger foods are my special purview. there is a stand at the farmer's markets here in ny--divine brine--that makes different sorts of pickles. while i'm not usually a pickle person their sour version is extremely good for our systems. the sour pickles have the right kind of acids that help balance out crappy over-processed foods. and they're loaded with probiotics to boot.
3. i go through phases with food. right now i'm having a love affair with eggs. i cook them in a little bit of butter, add in cheese and for en extra kick, pickled jalepenos. they are, without a doubt, a good start for the day.
4. and then there's grilled cheese which i've been having a love affair with for going on half-a-year now. spelt bread and cheddar cheese (and jalepenos between).
5. i've been experimenting with less sugar these days. these little dark chocolate coconut cookie bites aren't cheap, but they pack a punch. they feel decadent and sweet and each one has only 1g of sugar, which if you think is anything go take a look at how many grams of sugar are in a low-fat, fat-free yogurt (or even a larabar) and then we'll talk.
6. before i moved i promised myself in this new place i would get a latte maker for the kitchen (or as someone once pointed out to me, an espresso maker. thing is though, i use it for lattes, so let's call it that). i found a really reasonably priced one on amazon and knew that i'd make up the cost of it in just about two months considering how often i bought lattes out and about. i can't tell you how happy this contraption makes me. i wake up, turn it on, and then i go about my routine. it takes a little bit of effort to make my beloved coffee drink and i appreciate that. i also appreciate that i can have it any time of the day and it's insta-comfort. i have a beautiful girlfriend who had an eating disorder of her own and from what i can tell she overcame it by cooking dinner as much as possible and drinking wine every time she did so--enjoyment and process. well, i've tried to adopt this attitude myself, but i think if there's been just one thing that has helped me heal, it's a latte. i like the comfort it provides. but more than that it delivers calcium and good fats, and it's the perfect place for me to get some cinnamon into my daily routine (jam packed with stuff that's good for the body). plus, there's no sugar but what's naturally occurring in the milk.

YUM. I pretty much live off of pickles and grilled cheeses. If I could have a contraption for making lattes, I'm sure it would save me lots of money and make life so much better. Thanks for sharing.
YES. as someone who has also struggled with an eating disorder, i bought a delonghi espresso machine in january and it brings me the greatest of joy every morning. i also make it a point of planning and cooking with music-- enjoying the process makes me dread the meal so much less :)
Pictures look delicious! Can you link to the espresso machine you found on amazon? I can't wait to have one of my own...
Ooh I want an espresso machine but being in college that's just not feasible right now. Grilled cheese is my favorite thing in the world though.
I loveee these posts. You're such a smart cookie when it comes to food! I like that you don't go over board with extreme healthy food, that you mix in your loves and make them healthy and beneficial for you.
I haven't had a grilled cheese sandwich in years, which is strange because I love them...yours looks amazing :)
im the same way with cherries. i could watch a movie for two hours and munch on cherries the whole time, I just love them !
I use to hate eggs, but for the last 2 years i have tried to eat a fried egg every morning because they are so filling and so good for you!

I have been trying to cut back on sugar as well, though you are much better than me (I like a bit of raw sugar in my morning latte, which I also make at home). I will have to order some of those cookie bites to try!
I've just been and bought a bunch of groceries, but now I really wish I'd have picked up some cherries ;)
your food posts always make me hungry... for something wholesome and delicious and not too sweet... which is a good thing.
Aw, please keep doing these food posts. Your pictures are lovely, and I just really like your very balanced take on this.
I, too have been having a love affair with eggs! I love having 2 hard boiled eggs every morning with just the teensiest bit of salt. YUM!
I also purchased a Bialetti espresso maker and a milk steamer (I use it for lattes too). It does take a few minutes but I love the little noises it makes and the divine smell! It is such a joy! Btw, you look gorgeous in the photos in the new post.

I found your blog today via a fellow blogger and read some of your new as well as old posts ! I felt very inspired ! The way you write about your life is so relate able and real and emotional.
keep it up !
Meg, I love your chalkboard backsplash behind the stove. I had thought about this, but was wondering if any grease splats fly up and stain the chalkboard paint? Thoughts?
I needed this. It's been 8 years and I still struggle with moderation. It's good to know someone has been able to figure it out.
uh YUM.
i live off finger food
awesome food right there, meg!
i am always curious about that orange cheese though.. we don't really have that here in australia, what's the deal? is there some crazy additive thing going on there, or is it natural? i gotta look into that...
i don't have a special espresso/latte maker, but seem to always be using my french press these days - for making iced coffee.. which is kinda weird since it's winter in sydney. but i know what you mean, total insta-comfort. but i think that goes for most ritual foods and drinks - complete insta-comfort.
hope you're enjoying your new place! photos look awesome!

Meg, I think I once wrote to you about getting my own (a wonderful, wonderful (perhaps the best) gift from my Mom) espresso / latte machine this past December. I live in France and oddly enough have not been able to find a real coffee shop like we have in the city and in the US. It's sandwich shops making quickie, sub-par lattes or bars selling espresso. Part of what I used to love about drinking a latte was the experience: the ambiance of a coffee shop, people watching, reading a good book, and that soothing feel of warm milk, cinnamon, and coffee. For me, it is very much about the feeling of being home. I'm so happy you bought the machine! Cheers!
P.S. I have this machine in fire engine red!! http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=nespresso+machines&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=2184690414536857636&sa=X&ei=ImfxT5XdINKIhQf32-zfDw&ved=0CIABEPICMAE
