"I used to feel so alone in the city. All those gazillions of
people and then me, on the outside. Because how do
you meet a new person? I was stunned by this for many
years. And then I realized, you just say, 'Hi.'
They may ignore you. Or you may marry
them. And that possibility is worth that one word."

i love that those are the two likely scenarios: they may ignore you, or you may marry them.
This really is true. It was like a revelation when I discovered that it is totally ok to go up to a person and say, "Hi, I haven't met you yet, I'm so-and-so." As long as you are polite, confident, and genuinely interested, most people will be happy to talk to you.
I think meeting new people is definitely a skill that needs to be developed.
i love the optimism of this quote.
Dude, seriously. Love your blog. Your writing is addicting. And I love, need this quote.
=)
Great quote- I sometimes forget that all it takes is building up the courage to say "hi." I came across your blog pretty recently and it's just wonderful-- so glad I found it!
I LOVE THIS. it is sooo sex and the city, no?!?!
oh wow, this is one of my favorite quotes. i first read it when i spent a year as an au-pair in the us and i was sitting at a starbucks feeling homesick and alone. and there on my coffee cup was this quote... i didn't have the courage to say 'Hi' to anyone there but a few days later i met my new best friend.
So thank you, Meg for reminding me of it. Ju
love it, love it , love it.
such a good reminder :o)
That is such a wonderfully brillant quote. There's a lot of power in that tiny little word!
Thank you! This sounds like hope.
This is incredible. I read it yesterday, but I couldn't shake it from my thoughts all night.
