the grocery store.

yesterday i rode my bike to the grocery store for asparagus and mascara.

two things all girls must have.

i headed to the produce and became giddy with excitement upon finding ultra-thin stalks (best for crisping in the oven).

and then worked my way over to cosmetics.

there i stood in front of the wall of wands. overwhelmed by variety i reached for the old standard: thin wand, conservative length extension.

but then something caught my eye. the new falsies mascara. you know, the mascara that promises eyelashes so big that they actually look fake. but who wants fake looking lashes, right? only loose women would want such a thing.

loose women, i say!

and yet.

maybe, just maybe i might want such a thing.

maybe, just maybe i stood in front of that wall of wands and reminded myself that this summer is an experiment. on all fronts. so why not try? why not try the one mascara that seems most inconsistent with my own loosely cobbled self-image?

and so i got it.

and the summer pedals on.

Hahaha. People ask me all the time if I have fake lashes. It makes me giggle.

those first two lines are the best i've read in a long time.

i will be using that in the future, lovee.

ie:

friend: ready to go?
me: not yet, need my mascara and asparagus.
...
me: now im ready.

I love this. I think it is a grand idea to "challenge your own image." It's bold, but it is so so good for us.

One summer in high school I went a month without any makeup, and I think it changed the way that I thought about myself and beauty in general. I think it made me much more comfortable with myself.

Does it work as it says it does?! Inquiring minds and future "loose women" (ok maybe womAN.. and of course that one woman is me!) want to know!

this is what makes you so very entertaining, the fact that you can turn a trip to the grocery store into a discovery of self. You have inspired me to go buy some new mascara :)

I loved this post, but what I loved most was the label you gave it.

2 things:

i LOVE that you are in a place where purchasing mascara and asparagus at the same store is possible.

also, i adore the phrase "loose woman". you are my favorite for using it.

xo.

Hilarious! I bought the very same mascara a few days ago. :) I like it, but I have to admit that I don't think it makes my lashes look any more fake than other mascaras. But then again, I'm not one for modesty or conservatism, so I'm all about my lashes looking "fake." ha.

mascara that promises the appearance of fake lashes is the only kind of mascara i buy.

surprised?

Kristen,

It is Maybelline's Falsies Volume Express. it comes in a purple container with teal writing. while i don't think my eyelashes look fake, they do look pretty big!
