speaking with...

i've noticed that i've begun to have imaginary conversations in my head.

it's me. speaking to someone i might just like to speak to. in real life.

common enough. no?

we all do it? no.

tell me we do. that i'm not alone in this.

but, you see... the thing is. i've started having them aloud. when i'm alone. without even realizing what i'm doing. in elevators. walking down the street.

i've been caught several times, recently. it's super embarrassing.

and also, just a wee bit funny. i can see that. i haven't lost my mind completely.

the yellow is a product of cut and paste and some spell-check goodness. i can't figure out how to get rid of it. and don't really feel the need to. it's weird and makes me laugh.

Oh GOOD, this elicited a sigh of relief. So I'm not crazy ;) or at least I'm not the only one. I do this sometimes, mostly in my head, just playing out hypothetical conversations... but a couple times someone has caught me. All you can do is get a good giggle from it... xo

crazy is good.

so is the yellow.

I do this ALL the time. Sometimes when my flatmate says good morning in a certain way I wonder if he's heard me chatting to myself.

Oh well. It's normally a good conversation.

Every morning as I get ready, I "explain" things to myself. I talk about my past out loud to no one. It keeps me from rattling on about it to people who already know or don't need to know. Also I tend to accidentally sing a line or two of a song that's been in my head, out loud, at my office job on occasion. That's actually more embarrasing than talking.

yes, i definitely do this often... i have also been caught on a number of occasions doing it out loud...

the yellow fits this post.

we are all a little crazy. we are. it makes us normal. does that make sense!?

Oh I'm totally guilty of that. And it is quite embarrassing, sometimes.

It's also a little embarrassing to be singing your heart out when you think no one is around, only to hear footsteps behind you...

LOL! I always talk to myself...its actually calms down my nerves. But I always thought the rule of thumb was you can talk to yourself (normal) but you cant answer your own questions in third person (not normal).
However, I think being a little different and marching to your own beat is good for the soul :)

YOU ARE NOT CRAZY!

I thought I was the only one that did this. It's embarrassing, yes, but you are not alone!

So glad to hear that I'm not crazy either! I always say things, out loud or to myself, that I'd say to other people. It's just a way of getting things out there!

lol. I have imaginary conversations out loud too. Its usually with the guy I wish I was dating....... Silly silly me.

Yup! I do this All The Time. I'm sure I look like a schizophrenic homeless person. And at home if I get caught I just play like I was talking to the cat.

Looking at all these comments made me so relieved. It's nice to hear this happens to many others too.

And I thoroughly enjoyed the yellow things.

for some reason, this reminds me of "the yellow wallpaper!" in love with your blog and the way your brain works.

I speak to "other people" in my head all the time. Mostly to say things I can't say...Sometimes aloud. No one but my cat has heard, so far.

My sister used to think it was her prerogative to catch me having such conversations out loud, record them, and show them to the person I was "talking" to.

Now, I only "talk" to people in my car.

chelsea rebecca said...

oh its wonderful!! i think we all do it! and the yellow is too funny, i love it.

Dude, I do this CONSTANTLY. For some reason though, it hits me right when I want to go to bed. Suddenly, I formulate all these confrontational situations in my head and I get really worked up because the person I'm "talking" to, is yelling at me and making me feel bad about myself.

Oh, and I talk to inanimate objects. A lot.

You're normal, I swear.

I do it for sure! Also, when I'm walking home from school, I'll look around me, and if I'm alone I'll sing out-loud to my ipod. The only problem there is when you round a corner and pass somebody not listening to their ipod, and know that they've just heard you singing along to Glee :)

I am actually happy to see this post because I DO this, alll the time. I often have very very dramatic conversations with said persons. Basically, I have made-for-tv movies playing in my head, starring me and what I wish I could say.

I'm super shy so I've been good about not doing it out loud. However, people in cities are so accustomed to people talking to themselves that no one would react.

meg, i've honestly actually tried to be the girl who talks to herself sometimes. i hope knowing this makes you feel better :)

also, i know i'm late on this, but i wanted to tell you that i was really inspired by your monday maven interview when you said you most cherished your ability to deeply feel. i can really relate and i want to cherish that quality more.

Jalene said...

don't worry. i think we all have conversations with ourselves. completely sane. :)

i love your writing, meg. you are so lovely.

I talk to myself all the time.

I also talk to my dog like she actually understands and might one day join in on the conversation.

I'm pretty sure I'm a little bit crazy and totally okay with it.

gigi said...

Oh I do that all the time! It's good to hear that I'm not the only one. It's especially good to hear that someone so cool does it too. I feel much better now.

Brittan said...

i do it too. i also recite my to-do lists out loud. but i never seem to be able to say the things to the actual person i want to same them to... or get everything done on my to-do list.

Stef Howerton said...

No worries. You're totally not alone! I do this all the time. In fact, I sometimes hold the phone to my ear while I'm walking in public so I don't look like some crazy person talking to herself in broad daylight. heh

Kate said...

I do this allll the time! it helps me work out my thoughts.

Yelena said...

oh honey , don't worry! i talk to myself all the time, mostly in my head, but sometimes aloud. it can pretty embarassing :)

heather said...

hahah i definitely do this to. i will actually think things in my head & then say them out loud to myself, like i'm trying to convince myself that what i'm thinking is true. if we weren't a least a little bit weird, we would be pretty boring, wouldn't we? ;)

Laura said...

oh.. we all do it. at least I do. I was just telling my bf yesterday, in fact, that one of the things I love about my comfort level with him is that all the things I used to say/discuss in my head (and sometimes aloud when alone), now I say to him.
... he said he wasn't sure it was a good thing. but I assured him I keep some things to myself (afterall, I need things to talk about with myself when I'm alone don't I?)

i talk to myself all the time. i notice it most when i'm baking...my roommate's bedroom is right of the kitchen and i'll hear her laughing at me. i'll then realize i've said something like "ok, cake, you can do it, maybe just a few more minutes?" or "martha (as in stewart) do you really think i'm gonna make this recipe when there are so many ingredients? you've got to be kidding me!"

sadly to say...those are only a few of the examples...i push a stroller for a living so i walk around this big city talking to myself...people just think i'm talking to the kid!

Unknown said...

i talk to myself all the time.
ask myself questions, and answer them..then laugh at how silly and witty i think i am.

so does my boyfriend.
in fact hes doing it right now..
and singing to himself a little as he plays video games.
{currently hes singing the batman theme song - dadadadadadaddadada BATMAN - u know what i'm talking about?}

we're all a little crazy.
its what makes the world go round, no?

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful girl...

Don't you worry about talking out loud; worry when you don't have anything to say. A mind that travels the distance, that walks the brain, inside and out, is something to love and to praise.

The fact that you're putting your thoughts out into the world, means you're living in the depth, ocean-deep. Let the choir of you sing and listen to the song that comes out, in whatever form...

So happy I found you on here...

Love, K.

oh yes, i do this all the time!!!

I've done it as well. I try to keep it when I'm alone, but hey, it happens.

I talk to myself out loud as well! When walking on the street I will remind myself aloud of things I have to do, or sentences I want to write down for a story.... and then I'll look up and make eye contact with someone- and I usually just go with the method of smiling sheepishly and looking away, hahah :)

I'm glad you wrote this- and that they are so many responses to it - we are not alone ;)

Yup, I do it all the time as well. I also have out loud conversations with inanimate objects ...the tv, my kitchen appliences, etc :)

Jennila said...

I do this all the time, to the point where I'm not sure if the conversation actually happened or not. It's a way of telling stories... acting out my dream future... a way to go to sleep at night. The worst part is when I start talking out loud on the street and don't even realize it. I pretend I'm practicing lines for a play when I get caught.

Chelsea said...

oh my goodness. I absolutely do this. It only gets worse if I am in a funk or crying, I totally do the out loud talk to myself when I am crying. Many of comedians have made fun of this crying talking phenomenon. Thanks for your honesty!

Also, i love the yellow.

Courtney said...

I am so very very thankful for your honesty!

I have imaginary conversations all the time, in my head and aloud. It's borderline ridiculous and I feel if I was ever caught one might think I'm crazy.

Then again they probably already think that : )

Have you ever had an imaginary conversation with an imaginary husband? I have. I think it just might be worst to have these imaginary conversations with people who don't even exist or you haven't met... yet.

i do the same thing and i often fear that i am going to get caught!!
