and if i got lost in the store, i would close my eyes. and listen. listen, very carefully. and i would hear that faint and familiar jingle and relieved, i would bound towards it.
she didn't get it. to recognize the clatter of keys? what kind of strange child had she born?
but i got it. a constellation of keys exists in this world of ours. each with its own unique musicality. some more familiar than others.
the other night, standing in line at the drug store, i heard a familiar key clink and looked up to find myself staring at the back of a stranger.
and that's when i began to wonder. is that how i will find him? will i recognize the sound of keys before i've even met him? the sound of a gateway to a home we might one day share?
so i've started listening. i haven't closed my eyes, though. i'm keeping them wide open and living my life. but the sixth sense of this strange-child and would-be-wife is piqued.

oh my meg... I love this. The last husband-to-be of mine (was engaged) lit up my whole life. But I think my eyes were closed to many things. So, like you, I'm keeping my eyes as open as my big, stretched out heart that's waiting to be filled with a familiar feeling love.
p.s. I'm so honored that you featured my comment yesterday. Thank you. xoxo
i love this!!!
it's magical.
that is incredibly beautiful!
that's so gorgeous.
all i can say is that whenever i hear keys i think my grandmother is coming over- i hate her.
but all keys seem to have different sounds. :D
this is just lovely. makes me so grateful. and it's so true. when you find him, you'll wonder how he ever could have been a stranger to you. you know the feeling that you got when your mom came to pick you up to take you home? being with husband will be just like that. which is why i love billy joel's song "you're my home"
such a beautiful image...
Darling that is so gorgeous!! I love the way you think!
I am exactly like you I can hear my mums keys from a mile away (and also her cough!) And now I recognize the sound of mats keys as well. If I have the window open in our flat and hear I set of keys I run to the window and look down and sure enough its him!
xxxx
Love this.
I love hearing my hubby's keys opening our old door when he comes home from work for the day.
once again this is beautifully written. well done meg fee!
Beautiful! Lovely concept.
you know, i feel comforted by keys too, because of the way my dad's keys jingle when he opens the door.
but i wouldn't have thought of it being a way to find your future husband. this post, meg, is very romantic, sweet, and perfectly written.
can't wait til we find out exactly how you find him. :)
This is too cute.
What a lovely story Meg!
Keep listening and looking....
I wasn't even looking for my husband when I found him.
We were engaged a week later...love at first sight is so possible. We have been 10 years now and if it's possible, I love him more every day.
We are like 2 kids sick in love....
With regards to Sydney venues...sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you but I was trying to think. I have only been there once and I made sure I seen the obvious Opera House, Bridge, Botanic gardens but also I lived near Bondi beach and I did love this area so well worth a visit...although it may have changed as I was there 10 years ago so probably not the best person to answer your question.
Thanks for sharing
you just made me so happy and if you do not start writing a book soon I will be so sad!
:) beautiful.
thats all i have to say.
This was fabulous!!!!
I still do this. In college I could tell which roommate was home by the way their keys sounded. I still can tell whose back from lunch in the office by this way.
I hope that's how you find him. A familiar, yet surprisingly unknown, sound.
Hey there.
I love the posts you write about the one for you, the one you havent met yet. :-)
There is an Indian movie where the boy hears the jingle of her keys but before he can find out who it is she leaves the store. Then he accidently calls her on Valentines day and wishes her. After the phone call the girl goes to the window in her room and hears him whistling.
They later meet and after a few months of seeing each other he realises that it was her with the keys in the store that day.
I hope you kind your loved one very soon! :-)
Cheers!
This is incredible. I'm listening too.
xoxo
So beautiful. I have really been thinking that I should turn off my ipod every now and then and be present in the world around me. This is the best reason for me to "tune in" :) Thanks Meg!
