have i ever told you how very much i like parks and recreation?
i do. a lot. because it's about good people trying to do good things by actually doing...well-meaning things (and if you think about this premise, it's a pretty rare one on television).
anywhoo, one of my very favorite episodes is one in which the main character (leslie) has to go on a first-date.
and since i'm entering that period of my life (albeit, a little behind the curve) where i'm actually open to the possibility of first-dates i thought i'd share:
leslie: what if he shows up with another woman? what if one of my sleeves catches on fire and it spreads rapidly. what if instead of tic tacs i accidentally pop a couple of ambien and i have to keep punching my leg to stay awake?
ann (her best friend): those are all insane hypotheticals and i promise you they won't happen.
leslie: they have all happened. all of these have happened.
{cut to interview-style}
uh, no, there's more. one time i accidentally drank an entire bottle of vinegar. i thought it was terrible wine. once i went out with a guy who wore 3-d glasses the entire evening. oh, one time i rode in a sidecar on a guy's motorcycle, and the sidecar detached and went down a flight of stairs. another time i went to a really boring movie with a guy and while i was asleep he tried to pull out one of my teeth. i literally woke up with his hand in my mouth. we went out a couple times after that but then he got weird.

ok i have so many things to say about this!
first of all, aziz ansari is just the best. the very best. i loved his standup before this show and once i realized i could laugh at him on a weekly basis, i was beyond ecstatic.
seconly, i love ann and leslie's friendship. i was worried since it's so similar to the office (and with rashida jones being on both) that i'd compare the two but they are really their own separate shows.
and thirdly, i have had many, many people say to me (after meeting me), "you are april. you are april!! you are april." and when i ask, "why? how? what?" they usually say, "not so much that you look like her...but you're just so sarcastically unimpressed with everything...with life."
i don't think that is a good thing. but let's pretend it is!
Yayy for you going on first dates. If all those things happen to you, at least you would have great stories to share.
I'm going to try watching this show on Netflix, I've always heard great things about it, but have yet to try it! It seems very funny!
I love Leslie.
Haha! Sounds like an awesome show! Good luck on the first dates, I'm kinda scared of them!
Ahahaha! That's pretty fantastic. Well, at least these would all be pretty funny in retrospect!? haha. I have to say as much as I looooooved my trip, I'm excited to be back home, back to the routine and catching up on your posts. (is that sad? haha)
I am obsessed with Parks and Recreation. Every episode this season has been my favorite. Ron Swanson? Enough said. And Leslie...she is just wonderful in every way. I like her "realistic/goofy" personality better than that of Liz Lemon from 30 Rock. I thought you might like to know that.
Also, @Jennifer, you have such a happier outlook on life than April!! But, I can kind of see where people are coming from...
haha I think you're my soul mate, posting this! I thought of this EXACT scene today when contemplating some upcoming "first dates"! I love it. Amazing :)
So after laughing at just the quotes in this little post, I think I will be watching this show. And I think I would give up on dating if my first dates turned out like that. ha!
Tehehehehe. Man I love this show.
I really, really need to watch this show. It has been sitting in my Netflix queue. I must get on this!
oh i love that show! almost as much as i dread first dates... it makes me sound like i'm 14 but i'm all about the group date. though i'm still pretty terrible at them.
This quote is priceless, "another time i went to a really boring movie with a guy and while i was asleep he tried to pull out one of my teeth. i literally woke up with his hand in my mouth. we went out a couple times after that but then he got weird. " love how she still went out with him after that hahha. These are hysterical.

Hahaha!! This is great! Meg, I've missed checking in with your blog!
i am in love with parks and rec. Especially since I work for government, so much rings so hilariously true! SO glad to see someone share the love that is parks and rec! :) (I was laughing out loud while reading this snippet, I could hear leslie's voice the whole time)
i have never seen the show. ew i am embarassed for myself to admit that.
but i did just laugh out loud reading the clip...alone..in my cubicle.

THAT IS MY FAVORITE EPISODE EVER!
i'm pretty sure that if ben and jean-ralphio morphed together, they would make up my dream man. but that's just me.
ahahaha I love this episode!
My favorite quote is when ann asks leslie her niece's name and she shout "tourple!" fan-tastic!!
I've never seen it, sounds hilarious though. If the humor is at all like The Office I know I will thoroughly enjoy.
This is absolutely fantastic. I'm so in love with Leslie on Parks & Rec (who isn't?)!
I hope your dates go better than hers!
aahahaha i love that episode as well as this show. ron swanson is my hero but tom haverford is my favorite with his, "chicky chicky parm parm" lingo. the highlight of my life is when two of my friends who don't know each other, told me i reminded them of april. it was amazing.
i love this show. i'm so glad you posted about it. and nooow i'm going to go watch it.
parks and rec is MY FAVORITE! I just watched that episode the other day..
definitely one of the best shows ever.
love it. i laughed out loud. c:
oh p.rex. one of my faves. i love any episode with extended scenes like that. there's one in the camping episode where leslie gives her reasons for shooting ron. and tom's shorthand, too.
if my netflix instant was a VHS i would have shredded the tape by now, that's how much i watch parks and rec (and 30 rock, of course) as i was reading this i was hoping you had added the "monologue" bit with the vinegar and the teeth, and of course you did :)
also, i am simultaneously wishing i knew how to meet people so that i could find someone to go out on a date with, and dreading the whole "first date" thing that i'm sure the next few years will be full of. good luck, meg!
Ahahhh! I love Parks and Rec. I didn't like it at first cuz it seemed like an Office wannabee but the difference is that just about all the characters in Parks and Rec are NOT trying to annoy those around them. They're just nice people. So it's more plain ol' funny and less 'awkward funny' (which I don't care for) when stuff goes wrong.
Discovering that show was one of the best things that happened to me last year. And last year was a pretty good year for me. www.tomhaverfoods.com...instant smile maker. And good luck with the first dates. (Prob don't read any posts on my blog...ahhh NYC dating...)
Come back, Parks and Rec! I have missed thee!
I love that episode! I hope you, like Leslie, end up with the most head spinning-ly adorable romance. And that he brings you waffles.
almost as good as this conversation is when she says all the ways that guys have broken up with her. i was in hysterics. i'm really glad that you love parks and rec (and apparently so many others do too).
LOL Meg, you make me happy to be done with dating. ;) Hopefully your experiences will be much better than these.
I love that show and I just recently watched that episode. So very funny!
PS. I just discovered your blog (through rockstar diaries) and I love your writing!
oh girl. this and this alone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3cjgEw-ANw
