popops turns 88!

this last weekend i spent a day in connecticut with my grandfather and aunt jean celebrating popop's 88th birthday.

when i think of the stories that fill this man and the lineage he has unfurled before him...

there are no words.

and i am humbled by those giants of family who carved out a way of life for us in this country. the legacy is staggering. awe-inspiring.

Awww, I love that you call him Popops. Reminds me of Arrested Development. What a lovely man and how lucky to have you as a granddaughter!

My step-dad turned 81 last week so the poignancy and importance of birthdays is not lost on me. Neither is your comment on having no words. I have no concept of just what he seen or been through--no way to articulate the expanse of experience he has accumulated. I urge him, more and more, to write these things down. And sometimes I don't want him to for him, but for me. So I have that token and lineage and can carry his stories with me with greater tangibility. That last picture of the two of you brought tears to my eyes.
