a southern boy's closet.

my girlfriends and i have been talking of late about the type of men we're interested in.

types, really. because who can pick just one?

i saw a man getting off the subway yesterday: he was tall, lean, and had a lovely dark beard. and that was it. somedays those are the only three things i need.

other days i want a man with dark, deep-set eyes and strong hands.

and then there's the type from texas (or somewhere far south of the northeast). the type who wears pastels and button-up polos. who keeps his hair ever-so-slightly too long and combs it to the side when it need not be. these were the guys i was in love with in high school (and oh there were a few of them). it's a particular type for sure. and i understand the type--it's cultural. my roommate amanda does not, but she's from chicago.

when i visited my brother in boston a few weeks ago i snapped a photo of the innards of his closet. 1. because it made me laugh. and 2. because i knew it would come in handy at some point for some thing.

last night i pulled it out. offered it up to amanda as explanation. said, amanda, this is what a southern boy's closet looks like (keep in mind my brother spent many of his formative years in virginia).

a southern boy's closet

one look at a closet like this and you know, this is a guy who'll take a girl with pearl-stud earrings over a girl with diamonds any day of the week.

it's what we know--what molds and forms us that later proves to be the thing we're attracted to. (or one type, at least).

I know the exact type you're talking about, and yes, it is quintessentially southern. I went to college with TONS of these types.

regardless of the type - he's a boy through and through... as evidenced by the wire hangers mixed with the three token plastic hangers.

i wonder if a wife will cure him of that someday....

isn't it interesting how our likes and dislikes are shaped by what we know, even though we might not know it an exact point in time. Great post Megan!

In the least creepy way possible I knew I instantly thought your brother was super attractive for a reason! (Atlanta and then college in Virginia...)

This is my brother R2's closet! I love closets like this.

I went to UVa and they all dressed exactly like that. And the girls wore pearls, too, even with our sweatpants.

Haha! Meg, it is so funny you would post about this because Brett and I were in New Orleans this past weekend for a wedding and he, being from California, commented on how all the Southern men have a "uniform"--khaki shorts or pants, a button down shirt, a belt, and loafers. I kept hinting that I thought it was a very nice look, but I don't think he caught on :)

I totally get this. I live this. I see this everyday. I go to West Texas A&M, you see.

The problem with these polite, mother-loving, strong cowboy types is that they tend to be close-minded and set in their ways.

sigh.

Who doesn't like a Southern boy at least once in their lives? But where I'm from we get the wannabes who don't really get it.

For some reason I like guys with beards. But at 17 there aren't many out there my age.

ah, such a cool post!! I've been thinking about my 'type' recently, because i can never narrow it down. I like how you said 'types' that is so true! but I think what does it for me are nice eyes, height, a strong build and big big hands. haha! anyway, love this post. and your brothers closet is so great - so true about the pearls/diamonds!

there really is something about a guy from the south, isn't there?

ps: i get the beard thing too. some days it's all it takes :)

ha. yep. i worked with loads of southern gals/girls, and the pearls and pastel button ups sound exactly right.

i totally know what you mean about types!

i was suuuuper picky about boys in my dating years.

i was weird and wouldn't date boys if they wore basketball shoes. i had a philosphy about boys and their shoes. weird right?

i think i got pretty darn close with my type though..
tall dark and handsome, strong hands, someone who isn't afraid to get their hands dirty, but cleans up nice.

I go to UGA, possibly one of the most southern schools in the U.S.
Athens Georgia is just full of boys you're describing. And they call you ma'am and open up the doors for you. I'm a fan.

Oh wow - lots of pastel!
I know what you mean though, about "type" being somewhat cultural. I'm a sucker for tall thin guys who wear jeans, flip flops, and Columbia Sportswear fleeces. (a "type" of guy you see a lot here in Oregon). ;)

I didn't truly understand the difference until I had lived in California and moved back to Texas.

idk if i'm a "southern" boy, but I am a boy from the country. I live in Ky. My closet it similar to this, just make sure it is Ralph Lauren. Add polos to it, also. I'm not a solid oxford guy.

I think my favorite is when I go to a wedding down here (Louisiana) my favorite men are the ones that wear their dirty linen or seersucker suits with their bucks. I don't know if I can ever marry a man that doesn't appreciate seersucker.
When I went to LSU you could always tell which boys were in which frat because of their hair. Or the amount of holes in their khakis.

Thanks for this post it made me smile.
