1.12.2011

remember when i tweeted that one of my new year's resolutions was going to be to finally start a book club...

i'd like to move in. right now. right here.

well...
1. it's amazing that i tweeted anything at all, because--let's be honest--i'm not a champion twitter-er.
and 2. i'm thinking if i actually make good on my tweet, then good things will surely follow.

so mark it down:

book club
(yes, i'm calling it book club--just that--don't hate)
Sunday, February 13.
1:00 pm.

be there or be square.

if you're in new york city (or nearby), please come.

i don't want to hear any of this, oh i'm a stranger--she'll think i'm weird for showing up--yada, yada, yada.

nonsense, i'm inviting you. and i expect you to be there.

now the only question remaining:
what shall be our first read?

suggestions, suggestions... (please).

{if you will be able to attend
please email me for directions
and details.}

photo: my friend vicky took and then tagged me
this photo after posting it to facebook--
said it reminded her of me.
that simple though simply made my day.

I hope it works out for you. I am not close enough to make it to be a member of "book club" but wish I was. Starting a book club is on my to do list as well. I have 1 person so far...I feel like I need more. I hope you have success with yours! :-)

Oh, I would so love to join your book club! I just moved from Nashville to Queens a few months ago with my husband, and I've been hoping to come across a neat way to meet people in the city. This sounds rather perfect. Are you sure you wouldn't mind a complete stranger tagging along?

wilybrunette said...

@jordan--now that you've said this, i'm counting on you coming!

Damn! If only you lived in LA (or I lived in NY)! I'd love to join the club. I've been wanting to join one for a while now but don't really know anyone who is in one. :( Good luck with yours! :)

I will be there with my reading glasses on! Can't wait!

Oh, how I wish I was in New York instead of Utah right now... But since I'm not... Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonsen is hilarious, delightful and sweet, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak will break your heart, and So Brave, Young and Handsome by Leif Enger is one of the most beautifully written books I have read in a long time. If you want more suggestions feel free to look through my reviews - the blog is The Story Girl. Have fun and wish I could join!!

New York sounds much more appealing than Louisiana, to tell you the truth. And a book club sounds absolutely fantastic. If only I were closer.

I'll be there!!

Now...who wants to donate enough sky miles to get me from Portland to New York and back?!

Em said...

Oh, if only I was in New York! Keep me posted on what you pick- I'll read along!

ps. I cannot possibly recommend Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese enough!!!

I wish I lived in New York! I'm in Hoi An Vietnam at the moment ... a little too much of a commute.

Books I loved recently that you might want to consider: Brooklyn by Colm Toibin, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami.

Happy reading!

I was hoping you were going to say it was an online book club!! Wish I lived closer! I started one a couple years back and it lasted for about 4 months...then it all fell apart. I tried to begin it again, but schedules were too hard, so I bagged it. I hope to eventually find one to join with people who actually care about it like I do!! Have fun!

Joining a book club has been a desire of mine since the new year. But echoing the many voices who've already sounded this - "If only I lived in NY!"

Sarah Jane said...

I was hoping it would be an online book club too!

Maybe all us non NYC people could read the book and on the day of your book club you could do a special "discussion post" for us so we could all discuss it in the comments? :)

that picture makes me want to fly home from europe and join your book club (provided that you have it in an equally charming location) :)

I am so moving to NYC just to be a member of Book Club! (I wish.) But I would love to attend a meeting when I can.

I have a book blog with my niece and a good friend here: http://hilltopstar-books.blogspot.com/

From my own book group in DC, I especially loved the discussions from:
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Major Pettigrew's Last Stand
The Help
Love Walked In

Have fun! I love, love, love my book group ladies. You are in for a treat.

Hi! I'm in New York. And a complete stranger. And someone who resolved to read more this year.

And a big fan of your blog.

So this works out nicely!

I don't live in New York but your first book simply must be The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It's an absolutely magical and charming book. Plus it has to do with book clubs!

What a fun idea, Meg! Good luck. Obviously, I would come if I could! :D A book I recently read and loved was Language of Baklava by Diana Abu-Jaber. It was a little light, but I was completely absorbed, and it has both recipes and memoir, so that always makes it fun to talk about. Plus, the club meeting can be themed with Middle Eastern food, which makes it even more interesting.

Oooh - good luck! I've been in a couple of book clubs but everyone's committment to it really varied and didn't last. A lot of people would opt out and say "I just didn't read the book" but they would show up form wine and snacks and the discussion wouldn't really be about the book much.So that's why I started my One Woman Book Club on my blog. I really just post mini-reviews of what I've read! Keep us posted on yours - I"m always open to suggestions! :)

I wish I lived in the NY area so I could join you gals. I am sure you'll meet amazing people/bloggers... Good luck with everything

oh, i hope this goes well for you! being in a book club is so rewarding... it's one of the best things i've ever done (really!). some of my club's favorite reads have been The Help (by Kathryn Stockett), The Forgotten Garden (by Kate Morton), 29 Gifts (by Cami Walker). And personally, i loved Every Last One by Anna Quindlen and Cold Tangerines by Shauna Neiquist. And i hear the new Steve Martin book is fabulous.

Yet another reason why I wish I lived in New York!

totally just found your blog and read about "ned." i so appreciate your honesty, and i can relate to it SO much. thanks for sharing all that you do =)

i'm so tempted by this - although depending on the book, not sure if i'd actually have time to read it before the meetup [damn architectural licensing exams]. maybe the next one though? i've been wanting to join a book club for years now.

I have ALWAYS wanted to join a book club. You betcha if I lived anywhere near NYC I'd be there with bells on!!

Deepali said...

I wish I still lived in NY, I love book clubs. Not that there aren't any here in Philly. The best I have been able to do with my schedule is online book clubs, like Goodreads.
Good luck with the club!
I recommend "Room", "The Help", "Shanghai Girls", anything by David Sedaris or Jeannette Wells.

Oh funny! That's one of my resolutions too! Wish I was in NYC!

I'm SO BUMMED I live in Texas and not NYC right now. Damnit! This sounds awesome!

And some girlfriends and I are thinking about starting a book club as well, and we talked about reading one of Chelsea Handler's books first; you know, just for giggles. :)

Oh, SO wish i could be there! sadly, New Zealand to New York is a bit of a stretch... i saw a previous commenter already suggested it, and i totally agree, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is THE most delightful book i have read in the years. Really it is beautiful and you will love it.

i third the motion for reading "the help." just finished it and cried my face off. it is poignant, moving, consuming, at times chilling and others joyous, and easy to read.

i think this might be the role you were destined to fill! my suggestions: Gilead by Robinson; Never Let Me Go (about to be a movie); The Handmaid's Tale by Atwood (women empowerment)!

I recommend The History of Love or The Elegance of the Hedgehog. They are my two current favorites.

Sadly I'm a Texan who won't be moving to NYC for another couple of years.

If I didn't live in Chicago I would be there!! Maybe you can post the book you choose and we could have an online book discussion as well on your blog?? Also another great place to start or join groups is Meetup.com I recently joined a book club through them.

Second vote for Love Walked In.

I am currently reading Fall of Giants and LOVING it. You will too, if you are a giant nerd like I am. It's a historical fiction novel set around WWI. Espionage, war, death, love, infidelity, drama...so good!

I just finished One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez and loved it. Don't let the title intimidate you; it's such an accessible book and hard to put down. The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and These is My Words by Nancy E. Turner are also favorites. Good luck!

Enjoy your book club!!

You asked for suggestions, well...my book club has decided to do a sort of a world religion book club. I was hoping to learn about religions other than my own, and I have. In addition, I'm learning even more about my own religion! Our first book was The Faith Club. Good stuff!
