books and their nooks.

rain, rain come and play

i slept last night. long and hard.
and when i finally awoke this morning it was to the sound of pounding rain. pouring rain. pitter-patter-tap-tap-tapping rain.

glorious, glorious rain.

so i literally rolled out of bed taking my white duvet with me, cracked the window, and moved the reading chair just in front.

and there i sat. with my book. listening and watching and feeling the cool, damp breeze.

and i gave thanks that i asked for both rain boots and an umbrella for christmas. because there's nothing quite like trying navigate the eccentricities of a new york rainstorm if you're ill prepared.
and then i opened my book and disappeared. into another world. into another life.

i haven't read a book since late last may. i wasn't able to this summer. picked up many, but just couldn't do it. and so it continued through until now, december. a six month reading block. and knowing this period must come to a close i picked up a book that i'd read before. and decided to begin there.

and suddenly, with book in hand, the train ride seems bearable. and waking up on sunday mornings to a world of white seems poignant: a blank canvas to fill with a story between my hands.

don't ever let me go this long again without falling into a book. i'm a far better person when i'm living in two worlds--this one and the one gifted to me by an author with imagination and empathy.

Oddly enough, I've been in sort of a reading block lately as well. I think that teaching emotionally damaged high schoolers and working with prisoners and volunteering for a book project about women who've been abused/neglected while incarcerated--all that combined--means that when I finally get home, I want to watch 16 and Pregnant and zone out and gaze at my Christmas tree, and not do anything that requires any sort of mental stimulation.

But I need to work on this, because I know that when I'm not reading, I'm missing out on one of my favorite joys. Glad you've climbed out of the tunnel. :)

Books are always there to welcome you back with open arms :)

I spent my entire morning reading The Glimpses of the Moon... That Edith Wharton gets me every time. Add it to your reading list for sure.

Currently charmed and thrilled by Laurie Frankel's "The Atlas of Love" -- I'm 100% positive that you'd adore it, too :)

I awoke to a blizzard, so I spent my morning writing by the window... So calming, isn't it?

Hope you had a great weekend!

I had a (very) hard summer. I spent many summer evenings reading books. My world was salty and I wanted nothing to do with it. But I found consolation in the pages of twelve different books.

Then the semester began; the pain of the summer folded, life got a little easier. I forgot about books. I've read one since August.

You have inspired me to go and pick a few thick novels to immerse myself in over the winter break. Thank you.

I really need to pick up a book soon! I just can't find the time.
Thank you for reminding, that I need to make time!
because like you've said :
"i'm a far better person when i'm living in two worlds--this one and the one gifted to me by an author with imagination and empathy. "

loved this post- it gives me another reason to look forward to the end of finals week so that I can finally read Capture the Castle :) And that chair + comforter looks incredibly comfortable.

I feel the same way about my books - I love delving deep into a story and getting utterly consumed. And it sounded like you had the perfect day. :)

Hi Meg,

Thank you- that was the greatest compliment ever coming from you!

I don't know if you can see it, but on the very top on my page there's a tab that includes a search bar, Follow button, Share Button.. etc.

Hopefully that works!

:)

This sounds like the perfect morning! I love the rain! If I could, I would do nothing but sit in a good reading chair, looking out at the rain pouring down... With a good book in hand of course :) Best wishes from Norway

grad school put other reading on the back burner, and i've missed it so much. there's just something about being able to safely escape just for a bit in the pages of a good read; you described it perfectly. but now i'm curious: what's on your reading list?

i have been in the same rut lately! usually if i read little poetry (ee cummings, i wish you wrote a poem for me) or "the little prince", something small enough to get me motivated, i can usually get out of a book rut! but lately, it's been hard. it has taken me months to finish "zorba the greek" and "love in the time of cholera"! blargh! glad to see someone has gotten out of the deep, dark abyss of book rut-dom!
