just about two weeks after getting a brand-spankin-new-macbook pro last july there was an incident.
it involved an eight a.m. skype date to australia, a wee bit of coffee, a spill, and then a hairdryer.
the computer came out okay (or so i thought). the loss of the caps-lock key and sticky shift seemed manageable.
but then the trackpad stopped working just about a week ago. so into the store we went. i copped to the water damage, batted my eyes, and begged for mercy.
the genius kindly obliged. checked it in under tier-four damage and waved the fee (water damage is not covered under warranty).
but in helping this working-girl out, the genius did so with a caveat: it was incumbent on me to get a protective case and a silicone cover for the keys.
he fixed this lovey of mine. and i obliged. case and cover procured.
we're back in business, baby.
(though, can i admit something? a week with no computer? no endless surfing, beholden to no one and no thing...it was nice. i'm not gonna lie. it was really nice).

I'm so glad you are back! (And that you had a week of unplugged time.) I'm going to look into the protective cover for my laptop too... coffee and keyboards seem to go so well together - until they don't. But it's still a ritual I can't bring myself to break. (Thank goodness for kind Apple employees!)
I was wondering where you disappeared!
A break is good. Like really good. Glad you got one.
Computer-less for a week sounds like heaven.. especially since all of my work is done on a computer!
The people at the Mac store are so nice-- they totally hooked me up when my charger decided to stop working a few months ago.
Happy you're back!
Sometimes I give myself a techno break and it is nice...I agree wholeheartedly with you!
yay, glad you have it back!
Glad you've got your computer back. You're so cute!
welcome back!
welcome back!
Oooo, I think I might have been tempted to kiss the shoes of the genius! Although I hear ya on the one week of no computer - I just went two days without it and it was SO NICE. :)

I'm so glad you're back! I spilled coffee on my laptop my freshman year of college. It was terrible. But my IT working brother in law fixed it for me, but told me to never drink coffee by my computer ever again. What am I doing right now? Drinking coffee. By my computer. Whomp.
i'm happy to see you back! but-- i cannot lie. sometimes i take a week off from the internet. a little rest for my soul! and i like it, too.
what a nice genius :) glad you enjoyed your time off, but also glad you're back.
I caved and got a silicone key cover after having to replace my old laptop because I KILLED it with a glass of milk. Whoops! You're lucky yours survived, and what a sweet Genius to not make you pay. :)
Love your glasses! So glad your computer's okay and you're back.
Glad your computer is back in business. I do know what you mean about having no obligations regarding the computer. I just got back from three weeks in Italy, I left my computers and iPhone at home (although I did take the iPad-but didn't "allow" myself to check work email or blog) and it was soooooo nice!
The people at the Apple store are angel-saints. It's unreal. I dropped & cracked my new iPhone 4 in Napa, brought it into the store, and they gave me a new one. Unbelievable! I'm so grateful to them.
I have a case for my MacBook Pro but no silicone thing to cover the keys and I believe, dear Meg, that you've just inspired me to do so. Because I am not always smooth with my coffee/wine/water.
Yayyyy! For now I'm stuck using the crappy old family computer. I'll get a laptop when I go to college next year. I have a feeling I should invest in some protection for it as well, when the time comes.
